The NCAA Division I Men’s basketball tournament is a single elimination tournament of 68 teams that all compete in seven rounds to win a position in the national championship. The final play off round is known as the Final Four, in which the winner of each play off goes to the championship. 

The NCAA "March Madness" tournament is made up of 68 teams. During the selection ... before any tournament game is played, the teams are ranked 1 through 68 by the Committee. With the best team in college basketball being based on the regular season and conference tournament winning play is at position #1. There will be 4 of those teams that will be eliminated in the opening round of the tournament leaving a field of 64 teams for the first round. Then hose 64 teams are split into 4 regions with 16 teams in each, each being ranked 1 through 16 & the ranking are those teams seed. 

To show appreciation to the better teams, fthe 1st round matchups are determined by putting the top team in each region against the bottom team (#1 vs. #16). Following with the next highest team vs. the next lowest team (#2 vs. #15), and so on. So, this means that the #1 seeds have the easiest matchup in the brackets.
