Hard rock is a loosely defined category of heavy metal music characterized by a heavy usage of distorted, aggressive, bass-heavy guitars, dark, complex lyrics, and drum rhythms, sometimes also accompanied by keyboards. Influenced by the blues and psychedelic rock, hard rock has been around since the early seventies and remains one of the most recognizable music styles. The most recognizable hard rock song is probably "Born To Be Wild." The song was a top hit in the seventies and remains a staple in the genre. Since the early seventies, the style of hard rock has evolved.

Although, by definition, hard rock should not be considered as heavy metal, it can be loud and fast and is sometimes performed at high volumes. Hard rock is often confused with black metal because both are highly technical and involve complex lyrics but are indeed very different from each other. Black metal music generally uses fast, destructive chords and guitar riffs, while hard rock tends to incorporate slower, more melodic music. Hard rock is definitely a unique music form and definitely an extremely important sub-genre within the larger genre of rock. This article will provide an overview of the history of this influential music and discuss its various sub-genres.

The birth place of hard rock can be traced back in the late 1960s. Some early records such as the Beatles' " Abbey Road" are considered to be an early influence of the current rock sound. Early hard rock albums include such notable songs as "Hits," by The Rolling Stones, and "Honky Tonk Women," by Cream. Hard rock eventually became a replacement for other types of music such as soul, jazz, folk, and even hip hop. Hard rock continues to be a strong force today, and is still growing in popularity.
